Privacy

This is a personal resume and portfolio site. It has no accounts, no forms and no ads. If you agree, it uses Google Analytics to count page views, how far down pages people scroll, and clicks on links that lead off the site.

Last updated October 2026.

What is collected

Google Analytics, only if you click Accept. Until you accept, the Google Analytics script isn't loaded, nothing is sent to Google and no Google cookies are set. Once you accept, a script from Google records that the page was viewed. When you scroll to the bottom of a page (about 90% of the way down), it records that too. When you click a link that leaves this site (for example, to LinkedIn or GitHub), it records the address of that link. Google Analytics also adds its own standard events: when a visit starts, whether it's your first visit, and roughly how long the page was open. With each of these, Google also receives:

  • the page address and title, and the page you came from, if your browser shares it
  • your browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language
  • an approximate location (country, region, city) that Google works out from your IP address. Google says Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses.
  • a random ID stored in two cookies, _ga and _ga_3XLF72EHQC. These let Google tell repeat visits apart from new visitors. They last up to two years unless you delete them.

It does not get your name or email address, and nothing you type, because the site has nothing to type into.

Server logs. The site is hosted on Railway. Even without analytics, each request is logged with your IP address, the time and the page requested. I use these logs to fix problems. How long Railway keeps them is set by Railway, not by me.

Why

I want to know which pages and projects people actually look at, whether they read to the end, and which links they follow, so I can improve the site. I don't use the data for advertising, and I don't try to work out who you are.

Who receives it

  • Google runs Google Analytics and processes the data on its servers, which may be outside your country. Google's own use is covered by How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
  • Railway hosts the site and keeps the server logs.
  • Me, Zetian Tao. I see aggregate reports in Google Analytics, such as page counts, scroll counts, countries and link clicks.

I don't sell the data or share it with anyone else. Google Analytics keeps event-level data for 2 months, then deletes it.

Your choices

The first time you visit, a banner asks whether you accept Google Analytics. Nothing is collected unless you click Accept. If you ignore the banner or click Decline, analytics stays off.

  • To change your mind, use Cookie settings in the footer of any page. If you decline after accepting, the site deletes its Google Analytics cookies from your browser. Data already sent to Google stays in Google Analytics until the retention period ends.
  • Your choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the name analytics-consent, not in a cookie, and isn't sent to me or to Google. If you clear site data or use a private window, the banner will ask again.
  • The site doesn't read Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals. Use the banner instead.
  • Install Google's Google Analytics opt-out add-on. It works in desktop browsers.
  • Block or delete cookies for this site in your browser settings. Your visits are then counted as new visitors and can't be linked together.
  • Use a content or tracker blocker. Most of them stop the Google Analytics script from loading at all.
  • Email me at Zetian1212@gmail.com with questions. I can't reliably find one visitor's data in Google Analytics, because I don't know who you are, but I'll tell you what I can.

Email

If you email me, your message goes to my Gmail account and stays there. I use it only to reply to you.

Changes

If what the site collects changes, I'll update this page and the date at the top.
